Why Daily Bible Reading Matters
The Bible is not simply a historical document or a collection of moral teachings — for Christians, it is the living Word of God, through which the Holy Spirit speaks, guides, convicts, and encourages. Yet one of the most common struggles for believers at every stage of faith is maintaining a consistent practice of reading Scripture daily.
If you have tried and given up before, you are not alone. This guide offers practical, realistic steps to help you build a reading habit that will genuinely nourish your faith.
Step 1: Start Smaller Than You Think
The most common mistake is trying to read too much too soon. Many people commit to reading several chapters a day — and then fall behind after a few days, feel guilty, and give up entirely. Instead, begin with just five minutes a day. Read one short passage. Read it slowly. Think about it. That is enough to begin.
The goal is not to get through the Bible as quickly as possible. The goal is to meet with God in His Word — and a rich, prayerful five minutes is worth far more than a rushed hour.
Step 2: Choose a Reading Plan That Fits Your Season
There is no single "right" way to read the Bible. Consider these approaches:
- Book by Book: Choose one book and read through it slowly over several weeks. The Gospel of John is an excellent starting point for new believers.
- Psalms and Proverbs: Reading one Psalm and one chapter of Proverbs per day is a gentle, sustainable rhythm that covers both poetry and wisdom literature.
- Chronological Reading: Many apps and study Bibles offer plans that take you through the Bible in the order events occurred — helpful for understanding the big story.
- Lectionary Reading: Following the church's lectionary calendar connects your personal reading to the broader rhythm of the Christian year.
Step 3: Use the S-O-A-P Method
Once you have selected your passage, try this simple framework for engaging with it deeply:
- S — Scripture: Write down one verse that stands out to you.
- O — Observation: What does this verse say? Note the context, key words, and what is happening.
- A — Application: What does this mean for your life today? How does it apply to a current situation or challenge?
- P — Prayer: Respond to what you have read in prayer — thanking God, asking for help, or simply sitting in His presence.
Step 4: Attach It to an Existing Habit
One of the most effective ways to build any new habit is to attach it to something you already do. Consider reading your Bible:
- With your morning coffee or tea
- Immediately before or after breakfast
- During your lunch break
- Before sleeping at night
Step 5: Don't Let Missing a Day Derail You
Missing a day is not failure — it is normal. The key is simply to start again the next day without guilt. Remember: the goal is not a perfect record but a growing relationship with God through His Word.
At Tosu Chapel, we also offer group Bible study gatherings where you can read and discuss Scripture together. There is great encouragement in studying the Bible in community. We warmly invite you to join us.
